Gr. 4-7. How the Vikings lived and how we know about them from the evidence of a crucial archaeological site are Martell's subjects in this work, which is part of the new Hidden Worlds series. The text is dense with information, not always clearly organized, and the blend of history with archaeology and reconstruction techniques doesn't make for easy reading. However, the good color photos on every page help focus things, and readers will be fascinated by such techniques as dendrochronology and carbon dating as well as by the glimpses of who the Vikings were, where they came from, and the way in which the archaeological site of Jorvik in York, England, can help us learn about the past.
